We Are Still Here is a film about the Sami identity and culture. Far to the north, in the small village Máze, there is an old house with a special history. Seven young Sami artists came here in 1978. They had all grown up in a society that tried to take family, language and culture away from them. It was time to rewrite history and get revenge. They moved to Máze and started making pictures and organizing exhibitions: “We don't know if people came to look at pictures or to look at us.”When the Norwegian state decided to dam the Alta River that runs through Máze, the artists became part of the resistance.
There is only snow, wind, cold, and danger around. What does man seek in such a place? What attracts scientists, explorers, and travellers to the Far North? In 1933, the first drifting polar station in history was established here, led by Otto Schmidt and Ivan Papanin. The heroic drift of the Papanin team marked the beginning of the systematic exploration of the entire Arctic basin. 75 years after Ivan Papanin's legendary expedition to the North Pole, a television crew is heading to the Barneo drifting station. The film will explain what a modern drifting station is, how people survive, and how they work on the ice floes.
