The documentary film “My Russian Ustye” explores the historical account of the settlement of the Indigirka River delta by Russian pioneers from Novgorod, who are believed to have arrived along the Northern Sea Route long before the Nikonian Church reforms. The vast, boundless tundra, the evocative poetry of Igor Chikachyov, villagers’ memories of their ancestors, the traditional practice of ice fishing, and an old song performed by one of the film’s protagonists, Aunt Tamara Chikachyova, lend the film a poetic and contemplative quality. Rooted in history yet deeply personal, the film offers a rich and multilayered reflection on memory, heritage, and the enduring connection between people and the land.
